To begin with, the earliest evidence of a St. Patrick's Day, celebrated outside of Ireland, is provided by Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver's Travels Dublin. In his Journal to Stella he noted that in 1713 the Westminster Parliament was closed because it was St. Patrick's Day and that London was so full of decorations to think that the whole world was Irish.
Landing in America, however, the first meeting of the Irish in honor of St. Patrick goes back to March 17, 1737 in Boston. Despite today's St. Patrick's Day is closely linked to the Catholics, then it is worth pointing out that the protagonists of the first celebrations were Protestant Irish emigrants in America and that, in most cases, Catholics were strictly excluded.
